What place in the world do you never want to visit? Why?
There are countless places that I would love to visit, however, there are some that make me pause, and it comes down to values.
Travel, for me, is about feeling safe and free to be myself. That is why I struggle with the idea of visiting countries where personal freedoms are restricted, or where people can face discrimination for who they are or who they love.
It’s not a judgement on the people, many are welcoming and open but it is more about the laws and systems in place. Places like North Korea, Russia, or parts of the Middle East often come to mind. I would simply be too scared to visit here, worried for my safety, simply for being a gay man.

Likewise, Wayne. So many countries are off limits because of what I am rather than who I am. It’s very difficult to believe that in the 21st century, you would face the death penalty for being gay. But those countries don’t deserve any of our time. Fortunately, there are many countries in the world where anyone can be who they are, rather than who somebody else wants them to be.

So true Hugh! I think I will stick to the countries that are accepting. Sad it’s not like that everywhere.

You can’t enjoy yourself if you’re not comfortable.

Safety is always an important factor in where to visit.

I feel the same, Wayne. I won’t support any country with my tourist dollars if they restrict personal freedoms or marginalize any groups. Money seems to be the best way protest.

Thanks a lot Richard. That’s so true, if people won’t visit, there will be no income from tourism. Sadly not everyone feels like that though.

I totally understand. I travelled to Saudi Arabia a couple of times work and once for leisure. Although I was respected and treated well, I was definitely uncomfortable and on tenterhooks.
