Wayne’s Word – Hyrox

It’s a little nod to Wayne’s World, but instead of ‘party time, excellent’ (if you are aware of the cult nineties classic) I will be diving into one WORD each day. It could be something I learned, something bizarre that happened, a favourite word that I have rediscovered or just a thought that won’t leave me alone.

If you’re joining in on today’s word, feel free to use this tag to connect your post to the series: #WaynesWord

Today’s word is HYROX.

Today I had the pleasure and opportunity to compete in a fitness challenge known as HYROX.

HYROX is a global fitness racing event that combines running and functional workout stations in a standardised format. It was started in Germany in 2017 and is now a popular fitness event all over the world, with HYROX competitions in various cities. It is made up of part CrossFit, part obstacle course, and part endurance test with a good bit of repetition. Every race is the same format, consisting of 8 x 1km runs, each followed by a gruelling functional movement like sled pushes, burpee broad jumps, rowing, sandbag lunges, or wall balls.

It’s not just for elite athletes, there are divisions for individuals, pairs (doubles), and even relays. People train for months to shave seconds off their time. In some circles, it’s become the new marathon a benchmark of hybrid fitness. I have been training for a few months and this was the perfect challenge to keep me motivated and accountable. I needed something to work towards and this was it!

Fortunately for me, I competed in the mens doubles so it was definitely easier but a challenge nonetheless. I was never going to win the race, so for me, I wanted to enjoy myself and see if I could actually do it. I was excited and nervous but had no need to be. I actually really enjoyed the whole event and found the stations very doable, thank goodness I had been training though.

I feel relief that it is now over, yet DELIGHTED to have taken part and I’m sure I will be looking for my next fitness challenge to keep the interest alive. I would definitely consider competing in HYROX again. It was well managed and a real vibe on the day, great music, friendly staff and competitors and a chance for everyone to celebrate their hard work and fitness journey together.

The workout

Can you see how happy I look 🤣

Deadly Dozen : Done & Dusted

This is what I completed yesterday. So happy I was able to finish this and it actually didn’t kill me.

I wrote a post last week about loving fitness and the gym and yesterday I had the opportunity to compete in the above challenge at a nearby running track. Thankfully I had a partner from the gym with me to share the labours (not the running) and we managed to complete the challenge in fifty minutes; 12 X 400 m runs and 12 X labours.

In addition, I have to say, it was really great to see so many people loving the fitness challenge, different ages, shapes and sizes – there’s a real shift happening and it’s not just about looking good. It’s about mental clarity, resilience, community, and taking ownership of your health. What was once niche or even seen as strange and obsessive is now becoming the norm and it’s really inspiring.

Absolutely buzzing to have finished my first real fitness challenge, now bring on the next one, Hyrox in July!!! 💪🏼

Just keep walking.

How often do you walk or run?

Every single day. I walk ALL the time and I love it. Walking is one of my favourite things to do, although it does depend on the weather and environment you’re walking in. After work, I will try and walk for at least 45 minutes and here is why I like to do that –

1 – I find it relaxing.

2 – Walking clears my mind, I can switch off and forget that I have been working all day.

3 – It’s a great form of exercise and I always feel better after exercise, both physically and mentally.

4 – It’s a great way to have personal time and space or if walking with someone, it’s the perfect way to catch up without any distractions.

5 – Fresh air (obviously this depends on the environment). I have a forest park that I walk around daily and I always feel so refreshed after. Apparently even seeing trees and / or water can make you feel really good and has many health benefits.

6 – Walking is good for your body and heart health.

7 – It’s free!!! I love if I can walk somewhere and not have to rely on public transport / driving.

Besides from walking after work, I will walk pretty much all the time. I walk from the car park to work and as a nurse, I am on my feet all the time. Even in the hospitals, I will take the stairs as often as I can and avoid taking lifts. Also on my days off, I love to find new places to walk and explore.

Ok I think it’s obvious to everyone now that I love walking! I’m just grateful that I have the ability to walk, not everyone has that luxury.

As for running, I’m not such a fan. Don’t get me wrong, I have run in the past and do occasionally run. I always enjoy it and feel really alive afterwards. The only thing for me is that I will lose too much weight if I run too much and that is not something I need to be doing!

What about you? How often do you walk or run??

Local walks in Northern Ireland to kick off the new year

Last month we managed to squeeze in a few different walks here in Northern Ireland. Some of these, you can spend maybe an hour walking around and others you can spend longer as it will take more time to walk around or you may find yourself snapping away at the beautiful scenery. They are great walks for getting out of the house and taking in some beautiful views and fresh country air. I have provided the websites for each location so you can check them out for yourselves also. These are perfect if you are looking for somewhere different to walk or if you ever plan to visit Northern Ireland in the future. There are many other walks that I have taken or plan to take but these are just the last few that I have walked recently.

Take care and keep walking!

Saturday morning rituals

What is your Saturday morning ritual? I work quite a lot of Saturdays, especially in the afternoons but I do have my Saturday morning routine, even if I’m working later in the day or not. I just happen to enjoy my routine even more when I know I’m not working later in the day.

I love to kick off the day with a gym session. A little lie in until about 8am and then hit a gym class. It may be tough at the time and you may wonder during the class “why did I come here? or “why do I do this to myself?” but believe me, you always feel better afterwards and are sure to have a spring in your step. It’s a great way to start the day and kick off your weekend.

Gym workout done and dusted 🙌🏼

Afterwards, I love to go out for a coffee and some breakfast. Nothing better than a good feed after a workout. This morning we were fortunate enough to be able to sit outdoors in the sunshine. It was a perfect winters day here in Sydney.

Saturday morning coffee ☕️

I normally then have to get ready for work but not today! Today I am heading into the city to meet some friends from home. Looking forward to catching up and having some beers in the sun.

What about you? What do you love to do on a Saturday morning or what is your normal routine? No matter what you do, I hope you enjoy your weekend.

Solo Sunday in Sydney 🙋🏼‍♂️

Today I am flying solo. I am off from work and the sun is finally shining in Sydney. It feels strange but exciting to see blue skies after having so much rain. I am dying to get out and about so I take myself off for a really long walk, wanting to soak up as much vitamin D as possible and to increase my step count for the week. I can’t do the Bondi to Coogee walk as it will be packed on a Sunday. So I decide to walk to Watson’s Bay via the residential streets, hoping to encounter as few people as possible. I pass Macquarie Lighthouse and from there I walk to Camp Cove, just past Watson’s Bay. It’s a little beach that is not as well know, unless you live here in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. I take the South Head heritage trail to Hornby Lighthouse and return to Watson’s Bay. Here I take the coastal walk from the Gap Lookout and return home via Rose Bay.

As well as being a beautiful walk and a good distance for gaining the steps, it also gives me the opportunity to take many photos, most of which I can add to my future posts for my Doors of WordPress and my Friday Flowers ☺️.

I hope you enjoy some of the scenic shots from today. This is my happy place. Walking in beautiful weather, with stunning scenery and the chance to see what I can photograph.

Macquarie Lighthouse
Camp Cove – a small beach with lots of charm and city views
Camp Cove kiosk – I love the quaintness of this kiosk and it was the perfect spot to stop for lunch
Views for days when you take the South Head heritage trail to the lighthouse
Hornby Lighthouse
Walking from the Gap Lookout towards Bondi.
The coastal views are stunning.
City views and the Harbour Bridge.
When I passed Macquarie Lighthouse again, I took the residential streets to Rose Bay and then home.

All in all, my walk was about 3.5 hours with a lunch stop. My feet are walked off me but I feel great for having done it and I can now put the feet up at home.

I hope you all are able to have a lovely Sunday wherever you are. Take care and keep safe,

Wayne ✌🏽

Tuesday Thoughts – YOU LOOK SO FAT!!!!

You look so fat!!!! Have you put on weight?? What happened to you?

Ok so these are questions and statements that I would never ask or say to anyone and hope that no one else would (unless seriously worried about a loved one’s health).

Yet, I receive the opposite of these questions and statements on a VERY regular basis. You look so skinny! Have you lost weight? Are you eating enough? What is happening with you?

Granted I have always been skinny and always received these questions for as long as I can remember. However, I have had three different people ask me this in the past two days! When does it end? As a skinny man, it has always been my goal to put on weight, possibly for this reason. I’ve only really been working on my weight gain for the past five years and I want to do this in the best way possible and in a healthy manner.

I train at the gym which I absolutely love and yes I have put on a good amount of weight when I increased my calorie intake by 1000 calories. However, I noticed that my body fat was also increasing. Therefore, my new goal is to put on weight that is muscle mass and not body fat. I want to train well and eat a healthy diet. This takes a lot of time and effort, there is no quick fix. This is fine for me, I’m in no rush. However, the constant questioning and statements about weight is both tiresome and saddening. Now, I know this is not intentional. These are lovely people saying this and they would be horrified to know if I was offended. However, I am honestly surprised that I don’t have more of a complex about this. I guess I’m a tough cookie, quite resilient and do not let comments bother me too much.

Just another side note – unfortunately this is not people saying I’m skinny in a good way. For example, they could say, you’re looking slim or you look very toned…instead of saying skinny with that look of worry and disbelief in their eyes. Another point to note is, my weight very rarely changes on a daily basis. Therefore, I think people must forget how slim I am and when they do see me after a few weeks, they have forgotten and assume I have lost weight or I am not eating enough. People who know me well, know that I am always hungry and always eating. I love my food and am extremely grateful that I don’t need to worry about putting on much weight. Good genes I guess 😜.

Anyway, thanks for reading. That is my rant over. What are your thoughts on people’s own weight? Would you comment on someone’s weight? I don’t think people realise that being called skinny is just as bad as calling someone fat, which I personally would not do. Therefore, it really baffles me 🤷🏼‍♂️.

Don’t get me wrong, I am more than happy with my progress. Even if I will always be “skinny” 😆

Many thanks to you all,

Wayne ✌🏽
