Wayne’s Word – Quiff

It’s a little nod to Wayne’s World, but instead of ‘party time, excellent’ (if you are aware of the cult nineties classic) I will be diving into one WORD each day. It could be something I learned, something bizarre that happened, a favourite word that I have rediscovered or just a thought that won’t leave me alone.

Today’s word is QUIFF.

A quiff is that hairstyle where the hair at the front is swept upwards and back, creating a little or sometimes a LOT of volume. Think Elvis, rock ’n’ roll, and anyone who has ever spent far too long in front of the mirror getting their hair just right.

I think since seeing James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, it has made me want to grow my own quiff again. So let’s see how we go.

Quiff is one of those words that sounds exactly like what it describes, it’s short, sharp and slightly cheeky.

Growing up in Northern Ireland, it is a word you would definitely hear when someone was talking about a particularly impressive hairstyle or perhaps teasing someone who was getting a little too carried away with theirs!

Whether it’s slicked back, sky-high or slightly wonky after a windy day, a good quiff has character. I will be sure to keep you posted on my quiff journey.
