What alternative career paths have you considered or are interested in?
I have considered a few different career paths throughout the years. At one point, I wanted to be a marine biologist because I’ve always loved animals and the ocean. I also thought about becoming an interpreter, since I had a real passion for languages, or a tour guide, as travelling and sharing new experiences with others really appealed to me. For a while, I even fancied being a weatherman, I loved geography and was fascinated by how the world works. Furthermore, later down the path, I thought I might be a teacher, though I was probably a bit too young then to know what that really meant. I had worked as a teacher in Newark, NJ and absolutely loved it but it was full on and I thought then that it wasn’t for me.
Funny enough, nursing was never on my original agenda. However, looking back, I can see how all those interests are connected, curiosity about people, places, and the planet all led me, in some way, to caring for others. Funnily enough, here I am now, a teacher of nursing, living on the other side of the world. So maybe I got the best of both worlds: teaching, caring, and still exploring!
I used to want to be a marine biologist when I was younger for the same reasons you mentioned – love of the ocean and animals. Sounds like it all worked out and that your job combines many of your interests and passions.

I would have loved to be a vet, but the sciences were not my forte, and I would have been too emotional about the animals. I have volunteered at dog rescues over the years!

Oh a vet would be hard work but I LOVE tue idea of working in a dog rescue centre.

I always liked to become a geologist or an ethnologist, but I ended up as a linguist teaching semiotics at a famous university. What I liked. My life would have surely been different as an ethnologist or geologist – different but not better or worse.

A geologist would be really amazing, I find that so interesting. That being said, semiotics sounds fascinating also!!

Well, geology, semiotics, and psychology have in common that they dig deep into the past.

I was lucky in that I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and here I am working as a full-time content writer. Of course, there were other jobs over the years that helped to pay the bills, but I was always writing.
I’m glad to know you found your niche, Wayne, and that you’re happy doing it.

I’m sure you would have been good at any of those. I can picture you as a tour guide. Tours are the best when the the guide is enthusiastic. On the other hand, I think you’re doing a good thing.

Thanks very much Dan. I think anything to do with travel excited me. A tour guide would be fun and I’m very friendly but I don’t think I am extroverted enough. I would find it difficult to be over the top the way some tour guides are.
