What brings a tear of joy to your eye?
First of all, what is joy? Joy is a deep, uplifting emotion that comes when we experience something profoundly meaningful, beautiful, or fulfilling. Unlike fleeting happiness (which can come from small pleasures like a nice meal or a funny joke), joy tends to run deeper, it is tied to connection, love, gratitude, hope, or even a sense of awe.
As for why it can bring a tear to your eye, emotions aren’t neatly separated in our brains. Joy can overwhelm us in the same way sadness does, flooding the body with physical responses, like a lump in the throat, goosebumps, or tears. Tears of joy often happen when we feel something so intensely positive that it overflows, like seeing someone you love succeed or hearing a piece of music that stirs your soul.
I cried tears of joy at my sisters’ weddings, all three of them. I was caught totally unawares with my first sister to be married and had no idea that it could stir that kind of emotion. It was a real happy and proud moment for them to succeed in life and move onto the next chapter of their lives. A really lovely and emotional time.
This is such a beautiful and heartfelt reflection on joy. I really enjoyed reading how you described the emotional depth behind those moments, and your story about your sisters’ weddings was so touching. If I ever get the chance, I’d love to know more about you and your experience

There’s nothing quite like the feeling when joy catches you unaware. I think that’s pure joy, and it’s wonderful that you got to experience it.

Wow, your words really touch the heart, they paint joy not as a fleeting smile but as something that rises from deep within, something that moves the soul. I can completely feel that moment at your sisters’ weddings, that unexpected swell of love and pride that just makes the eyes water. It is beautiful how joy can sneak up on us, overwhelming and tender all at once, reminding us of the depth of our connections and the sweetness of life. Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt glimpse into your experience, it really makes one pause and feel grateful for those moments that catch us completely off guard in the best way.
