Bloganuary Day 3 (2024)

What colleges have you attended?

I think in America, colleges mean universities. Back in Northern Ireland a college is an academic school that you can attend from 11 years old until you’re 18, or in my case, from 15 – 18 years. However, I will write about the university that I attended as I think that is what this prompt is referring to.

I attended Queen’s University Belfast, not once but twice. I feel extremely blessed to have studied here (especially on 2 occasions) as it is the most prestigious university in the country, has a great reputation in the UK and is ranked within the top 200 universities in the world.

It is a very historic building with fantastic architecture and you can’t help but feel like you’re studying at Hogwarts. It is situated in a beautiful part of Belfast with lots of bars, restaurants and a botanical garden nearby.

I lived in Belfast whilst studying, pretty close to the university (as many students do) and was fortunate enough to be able to work in the students’ union. You really have a sense of belonging to part of the university here and it provided me with the best opportunity for making the most amazing life long friends.

I studied a geography degree firstly as I had no idea what I wanted to study and this seemed like the perfect fit. Although enjoyable, it was extremely difficult to find a job relevant to my degree. After a few years of working in minimum wage jobs, I decided to return to university to study nursing. I was thrilled to return to Queens’s and thoroughly enjoyed my nursing degree. The teaching and clinical skills learned here were fantastic and I have nothing but good things to say. If you study nursing you do not have to pay any fees and they pay you a small subsidy to help with your everyday living costs (as you have 9 placements to carry out as well as studying). The course was full on with a lot of assignments, clinical hours, studying to do etc., however, when you enjoy the course, that is half the battle.

If you are ever in Belfast, this has to be on your list of places to visit!

Have you attended any colleges / universities? I appreciate they aren’t for everyone and there are so many amazing careers that can be achieved without needing to attend university. The other thing is that they can be extremely pricey. I was looking at studying in Australia before and the fees were extortionate. Even in America, I don’t know how people can afford university. There are extremely expensive to attend. Maybe some of you can enlighten me, I would be intrigued to know your thoughts.

  1. You are right about going to college in theUS. People leave with a huge amount of debt hanging over them. I started my life by taking bookkeeping classes paid by the government and worked my way up to Auditor at a Summer Resort, learning by trial and error. I also took classes at N. Virginia College for some computer skills but afterwards I went and studied at a school that trained you in Microsoft. I passed and got a certificate, it says I am a Microsoft Engineer, but as they say life has a way of happening when your making your plans. I had divorced after 20 yrs of marriage and wanted to be able to always support myself so I took the course and I have the certificate, but funny and not at the same time, I had a stroke and it wiped it all out of my mind, so much for making plans. I was so good on the computer that I ran our companies web site, but alas life turns out as it is suppose to . So, I
am just thrilled that I can use a computer to type and enjoy such interesting
blogs as yours. 🙂 and continue on with my life as is. I am doing well and self supportive. I always threaten to write a biography as my life reads like a bad soap. lol

  2. College is a different thing there…here there is a prep year which they have in Ontario. Here college is where one goes to study things and apprenticeship and it if after high school…which might be the idea of College there? It’s a bit confusing as it starts to young. University here is to prepare you for professions like teaching, doctor, lawyer etc. College would prepare one to be a mechanic, plumber or electrician and practical nurse I think. Do the Colleges and Universities differ as much as it sounds in your blog? Interesting blog.

  4. Yes, Australia can be a bit pricey. For those of us who live here, we have the option of paying off our studies over a number of years. Back in the 1970s, there was a short period were all university study was free. My boss at work got his degree for free, and here I was working 25 hours a week for him while I studied full time. Thank you for sharing your story. It’s always wonderful to hear how people find their place in the world. Cheers, Cherrie.

  5. First, I did not realize that by responding to your blog post that others could see my response. I really do not think I have the time to devote for 31 days. However, as always, I find your post very enjoyable, so I may respond to some as I did yesterday. That is, if you don’t mind me hanging on your coattails.

I attended Hudson Valley Community College as an adult. I was married, was a mother of a ten yr old son and worked full time. So my “college life” was very different than yours. It took me 3 years to get my 2-year associates degree. I studied in the information systems field.

I later became an adjunct teacher at the Junior College of Albany (New York) that was affiliated with the Russell Sage colleges. I taught adults in microcomputer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets and database.

College was wonderful. I am glad I did it as an adult, however I think it would have been a lot more fun at 18!!!
