Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours.

What makes a good neighbour?

This is very relevant to me now as we are currently waiting on new neighbours to move into the apartment below us. Having rented for most of my adult life and moving homes a lot, I have encountered great neighbours and maybe not so great. Luckily, I have never had a horrific neighbour…yet. A good neighbour for me doesn’t have to do much but there are two essential qualities that I would want.

1 – Respect those around you and be aware that your actions may affect others. This could relate to noise pollution, keeping the communal areas tidy etc. Noisy neighbours has been the worst thing for me, especially if people are partying late. We have experienced some crazy kids / parents in our time and even heard people’s sexual activities (not fun to listen to in the middle of the night!).

2 – Friendly but not overwhelming. I enjoy knowing our neighbours and making conversations but it’s great when neighbours have boundaries and don’t feel the need to pounce on you every time you open the front door. This could also be down to respecting each others boundaries.

Has anyone ever had a bad neighbour? What qualities would you like in a neighbour?

Wayne ✌🏽

  1. Now living in an apartment complex that is for “over fifty” persons, I must say it is always something.  Ambulances come and go, fire alarms go off at all times, gossip coffee clutches I don’t join and some trying to live their teenage lives again.  Many oldsters with small yipping dogs😖Never boring at least😂

  2. I have had mostly good neighbors in my lifetime. But there was one neighbor that I had who was a nightmare. He owned a pit bull that was vicious. The dog attacked my dog, a sheltie, and snapped its neck. My dog was an elderly dog. Sweet and gentle. My son witnessed it all. The neighbors denied it. That was years and years ago, but I still remember it. I was so glad when I moved away from them.

      1. No, the dog died from the attack. The neighbors showed no remorse. They ended up getting their comeuppance when the same dog attacked and killed a cat at the school bus stop. Animal control got involved and the dog was taken from their home.

  3. I think you’ve boiled it down to two good ones, Wayne. We have had not-so-good neighbors, and they all mostly violated your rule number 1. I would add a willingness to help if necessary. Simple things, like bringing a sick or traveling neighbor’s trash bin back up the drive.

    1. That’s so true Dan. Funny you say that as I bring my neighbours bin up and down the street for him. It’s a shame when you have bad neighbours, I suppose you just hope they move on quick enough. I can’t imagine being stuck with bad neighbours for a long period.

  4. I have a neighbor who curses a lot. I don’t know why, but it affects me every time she curses. I like neighbors who have time to communicate with you. Since I spend most of the time at home, sometimes, I am looking for time to communicate with neighbors.
