The only thing I can think about at the moment is poor Ukraine. When Russia decided to LAUNCH an attack and invade Ukraine. It just seems so barbaric and unnecessary. People are so greedy and self absorbed. I dread to think what will happen when Putin takes over the capital city. Maybe he will stop there, when he feels he has won. With Ukraine taken over, the government dismantled, the media might stop and people will forget what is happening there. Like many other world atrocities, we tend to forget and move on with our own lives. However, the people still living there have to deal with the trauma every single day. Although, if Putin doesn’t stop there, where will this war head? Will he want to try take over other countries? If so, NATO will have to jump in and would that then be the start of WW3? It’s a frightening thought.
I just feel so sad and helpless for the people of Ukraine, as I’m sure many of us do. I don’t think posting the Ukraine flag on my social media will help. Nor do I think prayers will help. I’m hoping the world leaders will do more. I know they don’t want to engage in war but maybe cutting off Russia from everything might deter Putin. I know they’re trying this already. I suppose it will take time to see if it makes a difference. Sadly, the Ukrainian people don’t have time. They’re fleeing the country or seeking shelter. Just awful ☹️. How are you all feeling?

Unfortunately the barrel which the West is now staring down is one to which it has contributed substantially. For many years the attitude of Western powers has been to reduce the spend on defence and reallocate those funds to other causes, even though decades of history have shown us that the best way to avoid war is deterrents. Whilst we in the West have systematically reduced our capacity, the World’s oppressive dictators have smugly awaited their moment. Putin, and Russia, are by no means the only example. China, and North Korea, will be watching this with glee, to name just two. Of course Putin won’t stop here: Estonia will be next if and when Ukraine falls. Whether or not one agrees with transferring funding from defence to “more worthy” causes, it is indisputable that if deterrents were still in place, Putin would not be so confident of success. I fear that we are about to reap the rewards of kidding ourselves that the World is a universally peaceful place. Sanctions are a feeble reaction; deterrents would have been prevention.

Yes I completely see where you’re coming from. Other countries will surely be watching to see how successful Putin will be. Tragic.

I have no words for what is going on in the world at the moment. It just makes me sad and even more anxious than normal 😦 As if what everyone has just been through with Covid was not enough, then this for them.

The whole thing is so sad. You’re absolutely right that we often don’t think about the people right now rather than some eventual win or just a light biding of time.

Sad and helpless. And yes, we just get on with our lives. The measures taken to cut Russia off will be helpful but not in a useful way for the Ukrainian people. Not in a quick way. Not a way that returns the lives already lost, or rescues them in a hurry.
And is it the beginning of a WW3? Sad.

In Canada, they have imposed sanctions. They are looking at more. I’m not sure if they even have access or much access to social media on the Ukraine right now. It might be comforting to family and friends of people who are affected. If you know people who have family and friends in the Ukraine, you might want to reach out to them, so they know you’re thinking of them. Even if you don’t hear back, they know that you are aware. If they want to talk they will reach out. If not, then they won’t. Either way, it is giving them consideration and respect the fact that they are having a difficult time. I’m sure they are traumatized too as they have family and friends in harm’s way.
