Happy Thursday everyone and welcome to another week of wonderful doors. This week features the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse, perched on the headland at Byron Bay, New South Wales. While the lighthouse itself is the star attraction, I was equally drawn to its sturdy entrance door, which has welcomed keepers, workers and visitors for well over a century.

A beautiful door with a remarkable view.
Standing on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland, Cape Byron Lighthouse first shone its light in December 1901. Built from prefabricated concrete blocks and designed by colonial architect Charles Harding, it was part of the “highway of lights” that helped guide ships safely along the New South Wales coastline.

Although the lighthouse is now fully automated, it remains an important navigational aid and one of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks. From its hilltop position, visitors are rewarded with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, and during migration season there is a good chance of spotting humpback whales and dolphins passing by.

Perfect timing for the lovely sunrise! Great doors capture as well 🙂

i visited some lighthouses here in michigan on the great lakes and the stories of living there back in the day were incredible. it was not an easy life, sometimes a whole family lived there.

I love lighthouses, Wayne and this one is marvelous. You didn’t ask for a favorite photo, but I’m going with that sunrise shot. That’s a beautiful sight as one starts up that path. The other photos are beautiful, too. The door is great!

Thanks a lot Dan. It’s a great walk to the lighthouse, so many people were doing it this particular morning. I would love to do it again with no clouds, would be really stunning.

I love lighthouses! This is a superb beauty. The door is rather elegant and full of style. The lighthouse itself fits so well into the landscape, a great use of prefab concrete and well-suited, I would imagine, to withstand stoically the rigors of the ocean. Great share, Wayne. Many thanks for the details on the lighthouse’s history and your great photos. Much appreciated.

Wonderful photos, Wayne. That first one almost requires sunglasses with that bright white and blue sky!
The sunrise photo is also gorgeous. Thanks for sharing!
