Wayne’s Word – Racket

It’s a little nod to Wayne’s World, but instead of ‘party time, excellent’ (if you are aware of the cult nineties classic) I will be diving into one WORD each day. It could be something I learned, something bizarre that happened, a favourite word that I have rediscovered or just a thought that won’t leave me alone.

If you’re joining in on today’s word, feel free to use this tag to connect your post to the series: #WaynesWord

Today’s word is RACKET.

Racket is one of those words that feels onomatopoeic, say it out loud and it practically makes a noise of its own. In Northern Ireland, if someone asks, “What’s that racket?” they are not thinking about tennis, they mean noise. Loud, chaotic, intrusive noise.

It is the sort of word that gets shouted up the stairs:
“Keep that racket down!” It can usually be aimed at children, a blaring TV, or someone clattering around the kitchen like they’re auditioning for a demolition derby.

There is a built‑in disapproval to it as well. A “racket” is not just any sound, it is a complete nuisance. It interrupts, it irritates, and it demands attention you never asked to give.

Have you ever used racket in this way?
