Happy Thursday everyone and welcome to another wonderful week of doors. I have only two doors to show you from Holywood and they were taken on the main shopping street, aptly named High Street.
One is from a lovely pub where we sat outside for a coffee and the other is from a popular antique store. I would have loved to have had more time to walk around and spot some residential doors but alas, it wasn’t meant to be on this trip.
Alexander’s & Co, a very popular bar and restaurant. It can be found right in the heart of Holywood beside the famous Maypole, as seen in my previous post. Ps I love these doors! If you enjoy browsing for unique home décor, don’t miss Holywood Interiors. Packed with antique furniture, vintage treasures and beautiful decorative pieces, it’s one of those independent shops where you never quite know what you’ll discover next. Nice door and I love the little lantern above it.
Do not worry if you do a double take, this blog post is about Holywood (pronounced Hollywood), Northern Ireland, not Hollywood, California! While you won’t find film studios or red carpets here, you will discover a charming seaside town that’s full of history, character and plenty of hidden gems.
Just a few miles from Belfast, Holywood’s history stretches back more than a thousand years. The town takes its name from the “Holy Wood”, a sacred woodland that surrounded an ancient monastery founded in the 7th century by St Laiseran (also known as St Molaisse). The impressive ruins of Holywood Priory, dating back to the 13th century, still stand in the heart of the town as a reminder of its rich past.

Today, Holywood is widely regarded as one of Northern Ireland’s most affluent towns, known for its attractive homes, excellent schools and vibrant café culture (not somewhere I can afford to buy). Despite its upmarket reputation, it is also a paradise for bargain hunters, with around ten charity shops dotted throughout the town centre . Thanks to the area’s wealthy population, they are renowned for offering everything from designer fashion to unique homeware at fantastic prices, making Holywood one of the best places in Northern Ireland for a charity shop treasure hunt.
Take a stroll along the waterfront, browse the independent stores, stop for a coffee, or spend an hour hunting for hidden gems in the charity shops. The town is also the birthplace of golfing legend Rory McIlroy, adding another claim to fame for this picturesque corner of County Down.
Whether you are visiting for the history, the scenery, the shopping or simply to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, Holywood is one of those places that quietly leaves a lasting impression. Who knew one of Northern Ireland’s best shopping experiences could be found in its charity shops? I certainly didn’t but it was a welcome surprise.
