Thanks Di for this week’s questions. I haven’t participated in some time but these questions really resonated with me this week.
1. Can you remember your first wage packet?
I remember I was so excited to receive my first payslip when I was 16. I cannot remember the total but I remember the hourly rate being £3.30 an hour. I thought this was great at the time and I’m sure it was as I had nothing to pay for, no bills, rent etc.
2. Was it cash, a cheque or paid directly into your bank account?
It was paid directly into my bank account.
3. Do you prefer to shop with cash or card?
I much prefer to pay with card, it’s so much easier and much cleaner than having to touch money. In fact, I don’t even carry a bank card as I have it on my phone. I literally just carry my phone for everything, which is slightly worrying, if I lose my phone or it runs out of battery. That being said, I am going to actively try to use cash for small things like coffees, getting my hair cut etc as I have noticed that banks are charging a fee to use your phone / card and the shop assistant etc never tell you this. For example, a coffee here is about $4.50 but if I use my phone / card they charge an extra 30 cents. That soon adds up if you’re using your phone / card all the time. Plus I hate to think I am giving my hard earned cash to the banks!
4. Do you know the price of half a dozen eggs?
I don’t buy eggs very often as they had been very hard to get here in Australia for some time and they’re very expensive. I think half a dozen would be about $5 but I could be wrong. If I was to buy eggs, I would always buy a dozen which is normally about $8 or $9.
5. Have you ever kept chickens?
No but I would absolutely love to in the future!!! They are such quirky birds with lots of character and imagine having all those free eggs!!

I remember getting my first paycheque, which was exciting but also disappointing after seeing how much tax was taken off!

Oh that certainly hasn’t improved over the years!

A bit of advice on the chickens (from someone who just started raising them this year) – Don’t expect it to be cheap! There’s a lot of upfront costs, plus ongoing feed, cleanup, and the occasional vet bill.
On the plus side, they are fun pets. They can be trained to do small things (jumping up on a roost, swinging on a swing set, etc), and the wonderful fresh eggs. Also, certain types loved to be cuddled. 🐣

Thanks Richard, you have taught me a couple of things today. I think I knew they could be pricey but had no idea they could be trained to do small things or some enjoy a cuddle!!! Overall, are you enjoying the experience of having chickens? I think I would be worried about their safety too if there were any local foxes in the vicinity.

Oh, I love having them. My wife refers to them as our little dinosaurs. They each have their own personalities and little routines. They also love tomatoes. I’ll cut them up into small pieces and the hens go crazy.
I don’t free-range (let them walk around freely) as we have red-tailed hawks and owls in our neighborhood. They have a nice little coop and an enclosed run (which I’ll be expanding in a few months).
I suggest checking to see if there are any local chicken groups in your area, or find an online forum to learn more and ask questions. I think it’s fun, rewarding, and entertaining. 🙂

First I need a garden. This will be many years down the line so far now I will live through hearing about yours.

I remember my first job. It was stacking shelves in a small corner store for a couple of hours after school 3 nights a week. I also used to babysit every Saturday evening for the couple who owned the store.

Stacking shelves, that was included in my first job, didn’t mind at all. Babysitting not so much love for that haha. Thanks for sharing Sheree, interesting to hear.

Hi Wayne! Thanks for joining in this week. We enjoyed having our chickens and would do so again, but apparently there is a covenant on properties here that states domestic pets only.
We use our debit card for larger purchases or meals out, but I am trying to use cash more. I know banks charge companies a percentage for card payments, and some cards like American Express and Diners had a higher rate when I was working in accounts. Our phones don’t hold bank details or internet connections, which actually suits us. I’m a technophobe and find it all very worrying as I don’t understand it and my brain doesn’t work that way.

Thanks Di for having me and posting such great questions! Maybe that’s a good thing it doesn’t work on your phone as it almost makes it too easy. I have just bought a purse / money bag to put my cash in, now to get to the nearest ATM.

Watch out that it doesn’t charge you to withdraw cash. We have several here that charge something like £2..99 regardless of amount and it;s your own money!!!!!!

Oh that’s right. I will be going to my own bank so it will be free of charge. Thanks Di.
